Lord of the Flies Part 2 Answers

*Think a bit deeper about the themes present in the book- what do you think Golding might have been trying to say about society and politics?
I think that Golding was trying to say to us that politics are walways going to be an issue no matter how old we are. In Lord of the Flies, Jack convinces the boys to vote for him to lead with Ralph when all along picking Piggy would have been the better option. Even though Jack was more popular then Piggy, Piggy would have had made a better combination with Ralph then Jack. Everything in politics somehow is or can turn into a popularity contest. From picking captains on a sports team to picking the President has always been about what they could give you then what they could help or change for you.


*Symbols are everywhere in LotF- pick 2 that really stood out to you and discuss their importance to the story.
Two symbols that stood out to me was the conch shell and "the beast". The conch shell was used as an instrument that showed authority. When someone had the conch, they had the right to speak and knew that they were going to be heard. The conch was also a symbol of power and control for Ralph. The beast was a symbol of fear for the boys. Knowing that someone else was on the island with them scared them to know that no adults were there to protect them. They became insane and obsessed to the idea of "the beast" and eventually eneded up murdering Simon, thinking that he was the beast.
